Our Story
Pamban Nesakkarangal Charitable Trust is an NGO operating from Pamban since 2004. The registered office of the trust is in Chennai and registration number is Bk4/228/2004. It was started with the intention of serving and providing relief to the disabled and the families of the fishermen who sustained serious injuries or tragically lost their lives in sea accidents. In 2016, under the management of President and Managing trustee Mr. S. Armstrong Fernando, the trust inaugurated its own community radio station “Kadal Osai FM 90.4” under the guidelines of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Since 2017, Mrs. Gayathri Usman has been inducted into the trust as a member and appointed as the Station Head of the community radio station, and manages the functions, activities and projects of the trust in an administrative role. The trust holds a roster consultative status in the UN’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
Due to the massive reach of the community radio station and the bigger gravity of impact created by it, Pamban Nesakkarangal Charitable Trust has since conducted most of its social service for the community through the Kadal Osai FM, making it the trust’s primary activity. Through Kadal Osai FM we are able to be connected to a large number of people in the region by broadcasting fresh programmes aimed at narrating the daily lives of people in the Island to inspire everyone to come forward and work together to build a better future. The radio’s programmes touch a variety of subjects relevant to the region such as enhancing the lives of the fishing community, providing daily weather updates, creating awareness on government schemes beneficial to the fishing community, SDG 13: Climate action and SDG 14: Life below water, and women and child empowerment (SDG 3: Good health and well-being and SDG 4: Quality education). Field events like distribution of supplies and awareness programmes are also conducted by the trust.
