Climate action
Unless immediate action is taken to drastically reduce the adverse effects of some human activities on the sea shores and in the ocean, the oceans will cease to be a source of livelihood for the fishermen. Keeping this in mind, Kadal Osai FM 90.4 is committed to protecting and preserving the oceans for the future generations of fishermen. This is done by creating awareness among fishermen on the negative effects of activities like dumping garbage on the shores, fishing using banned methods, and capturing endangered species of sea animals like sea turtles and dugongs.
- Kadal Kaapan Award: On world radio day 2021, Kadal Osai FM introduced a new initiative called Kadal Kaapan (Saviour of the sea), through which the trust rewards fishermen who document the act of themselves freeing sea turtles caught in their fishing nets and submit it to the radio station with a cash prize of Rs.1,000/-, a certificate and a t-shirt to honour their noble act. Since its inception, 7 fishermen have received the rewards by freeing sea turtles caught in their nets. The award is meant to be motivation for the fishermen to go through the effort of releasing the endangered sea animal and preserving the ocean’s ecosystem.
- Beach cleaning event: On World Fisheries day 2019, Kadal Osai FM organised a massive beach cleaning event in collaboration with a local group “Pamban Theevu Seithigal”.
